The Health and Social Care Course has been created to provide students with a broad educational basis for moving into employment or further education within the Health and Social Care Sector.

This course aims to introduce students to this important establishment; giving all the information they will need to know, to understand if they wish to pursue a career in this people-centric industry.

The health and social care system offers a wide range of services across all sectors, including public, private, and voluntary. The services provided can be found in hospitals, children’s services, care homes, medical and dental services, emergency services and much more, and local authorities, care providers, health services, housing providers and the criminal justice system all contribute to the effectiveness of these services. The focus, however, is always on the individual; ensuring appropriate services are provided to the children and adults who need the care and support of the health and social care system to live lives that are free from abuse and neglect.

Introduction to the key issues, terms, and legislation that you may find in the health and social care sector. There is a wide range of roles within the health & social care industry; this module exposes students to these roles and supplies a case study to enhance understanding and give the opportunity to consider the role you may wish to pursue.

Words such as ‘discrimination’, ‘oppression’ and ‘values’, are of great importance within this sector, and in the 2nd module of the Health and Social Care Course you will be given an even greater understanding of what these concepts mean, and how your own views and life experiences can affect the way you practice, whilst recognising that your own values and beliefs may differ to those that you work with.

The ability to communicate effectively is important in everyday life, as well as in most careers, but in health & social care it is of central importance, as the impacts of poor communication can affect lives in severe ways. In the 3rd module this importance is stressed, with the considerations of the impacts of poor communication discussed, along with the barriers to good communication that can be faced within this particular role. The module then goes on to talk about how the individual and alternative needs and preferences of individuals can be met.

Module 4 of the Health & Social Care Course talks about the importance of understanding the roles, responsibilities, aims and priorities of other agencies that you will need to work with, when ensuring service users get the most effective and appropriate services applicable to their needs. This collaboration between agencies involves sharing confidential information belonging to the service user. As something that professionals can fear, this module discusses this important topic and how to navigate this area of the role.

Although this is an industry that focuses on the well-being of others, it is also important to take time for your own development. The 5th module explores reflective practice and continuing professional development, and how considering the influences on the way you work and how setting and completing professional development plans can help to improve your capacity to fill your role, which in turns helps service users.

Many of the roles within Health and Social Care, such as health visitors, Nurses, child minders, social workers, and family support workers, work with children and families. It is therefore important for there to be a basic understanding of human growth and development, so that these professionals can identify when a child is not meeting their usual milestones, which can be indicative of health and development concerns. Module 6 talks students through the key ages and how a child, between the ages 0-18 years should have developed, and then goes on to discuss other important topics about child development.

Safeguarding is an important area for all those working in the health and social care system to understand, as you will often work with children and vulnerable adults. The final module of the Health and Social Care Course provides a sound basic knowledge base on the issues of abuse and neglect, this includes: understanding the types and keys signs of abuse and what is expected of you in your role, outlining the process for reporting suspected abuse.

In addition to the 7 modules, the course also includes a Glossary, should you need to refer to any terms used throughout the course that you do not understand.
